the american gothic painting was a man and his wife standing in front of a small house....the pitch fork in the mans hand was to symbolize manual labor of the time....the small house is a house in Eldon, Iowa close to where Grant Wood lived....the house is a Gothic revival style house indicated by the top window in the shape of a medeival pointed arch....thats where the name of the painting came

This was a very unfortunate time for most people….In the picture you may not have realized but there is only a mother and the children not a father……I believe this is a symbol that familys were in desperate times and could not bring in a steady income, if they were able to bring in any….
